A joint Dahlia Committee formed by selecting members from National Dahlia Society and Royal Horticultural Society in Britain has classified modern dahlia into 10 forms. Shape of the flowers, flowering patterns and resemblance to other flowers form the basis of classification.

Dahlias are propagated by division of tuberous roots, stem cuttings or seed. During division, tubers must have at least one eye or a piece of the crown. Commercially, stem cuttings are used to increase cultivars. About 7.5- 10 cm long stem cuttings are taken from the young green shoots, produced from the crown of the tubers.

a) Fertilization:

Dahlias require cool temperate climate with frost free environment. Temperature and light affect the rate of vegetative growth, flower initiation & development as well as tuberous root formation. The optimum temperature range for vegetative shoot development is 13 to 25 0c.

Dahlias are regarded as one of the most favourite garden plants because of their unrivalled splendour and gorgeously coloured blooms.
